Week 2 Blog -- Math & Art -- Phoebe Nguyen

Mathematics has been a great contributing factor to the evolution of art and science as it brings a new and broad perspective on academics and creative expression. For example, Leonardo da Vinci heavily utilized the concept of perspective and the “golden ratio” to create his famous artworks. Through the ability to understand a vanishing point as well as how to create optical illusions on 2D surfaces, da Vinci was able to use perspective to imitate real life in his works (Vesna 20:16). As seen in the image below, various mathematical concepts such as the use of parallel lines contribute to the idea of a vanishing point in which intellectuals are able to create a three-dimensional look on flat surfaces, which was a highly innovative idea that allowed for more realistic representations in overall culture (Frantz 2000).

Charles Csuri, an intellect with experience in computer programming and graphic design, combines his expertise in the mathematical field and showcases his new approach of knowledge through his artwork. His piece titled “Sine Curve Man” takes a mathematical concept “sine”, which is usually seen as a simple numerical value, and brings it into a new light and perspective; one in which the lines created by sine are brought together to show a man. His use of powerful computer technologies was able to bring a new dimension of humility to the use of numbers in terms of how individuals experience things visually (Csuri 1967).

This blending of math, science, and the arts have led to new and innovative fields of study. John Maeda, an innovator in tech, design, and business, observes “design isn’t just about beauty; it’s about market relevance and meaningful results” (Maeda 2018). This new view is directly seen in the field of UX Design. This field is focused on the use of computer programming skills to create the most effective and user-friendly interfaces that can help boost sales and engagement for various companies.

The merging of concepts has opened new avenues of thought that allow individuals to think more creatively and maximize their skillsets. Politicians in particular have been able to expand their thinking as they “...transcend the limits of their own experience and imagine new possibilities” (Henderson 1984) whether this is seen in policymaking or other methods of social change.
